Art & Design

I have been interested in Art and Design since childhood. From being sent to the Munster finals in Art by my Primary School, to getting a degree in Architecture, I have always been interested in the creative parts of life, which would also include writing and music. Below is a representation of some of the visual projects I have worked on both professionally and privately.

Webdesign

Webdesign is a recent edition to my experience. It is worth noting that a significant part of webdesign is interactive or user experience orientated, not just visual. I also feel that great imagery and photography elevates sites to more than just practical information. With regards to the websites for O'Neills Mace and Open Door Studios Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator were used to create the visual elements with the sites being constructed using WordPress Content Management System (CMS).

Some projects here are essentially practice projects constructed with either purely html and css or utilizing Adobe Dreamweaver, the main focus in these instances being to practice construction of pages and sites.

I feel it is valuable to get experience within the online world as the technological aspects of life are becoming more and more a part of our day to day experiences.

Painting and Graphic Design

I have been drawing and painting since childhood. I started painting in oils when I was 14 with many of these hanging in family members houses. Its an enjoyable hobby and I have learnt a lot about visual design as a result. The fact that using oils tends to slow the painting process gives time to contemplate what is happening with the end result often being the result of an evolution and thus different from what was initially envisaged.

Graphic design could be said to be a part of all visual design, elevations of buildings for example tend to have graphic qualities as do paintings and all types of presentations intended to visually communicate ideas.

Digital Manufacturing

I recently completed a Certificate in Digital Manufacturing course run by the University of Limerick in the Fab Lab in Limerick City. The course concentrated on the interface between digital design software and contemporary manufacturing methods. The three manufacturing methods focused on and implemented were 3D Printing, Lasercutting and CNC Routing.

I completed four projects as shown below, an extendable camera LCD viewing device, a 3D childs jigsaw and painting set, a timber self assembled fruit bowl kit and an adjustable kids lamp based on the movement of shipping containers. The projects were designed and drawn utilizing software such as AutoCAD, Sketchup, Sculptris and more with the manufacturing utilizing Birch plywood, lasercut and etched mirrored acrylic, lasercut and etched acrylics and PLA filament for 3D printing.
